Non-Formal Education (NFE)
SUF have been running Non-Formal Education programs since establishment in 1988. Currently SUF runs NFE centres in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Netrokona and Barisal. NFE is community based, free education from grades I - VIII that has been designed for the most marginalised children in the community. Many of the children SUF work with are involved in child labour, therefore NFE is a flexible education system, running several school sessions a day allowing children to access classes either before or after work. Class courses have been condensed and are adapted to the needs of the community. SUF provide all teachers involved in this program with appropriate training on teaching and learning techniques for children from marginalised backgrounds and child centred approaches. Through this program both children and parents learn the value of education as well as life skills and child rights. Children that once thought they would never learn basic literacy and numeracy develop a sense of empowerment and craving to learn more. As SUF works using collaborative and sustainable approaches, once children finish the NFE program they have the opportunity to enrol in further skill development in SUF vocational training and or apply for the SUF mainstream educational sponsorship program (Bright Girls and Bright Boys).
Mainstream Program
This project aims to give marginalised and at risk children the opportunity to access mainstream formal education. Due to financial constraints many families cannot afford to send their children to mainstream schools to complete and graduate high school therefore many children drop out of school after basic NFE.
Through establishing collaborative partnerships; SUF, government and non-government formal schools in the project areas are able to provide a reduced fee system for SUF students enrolling in mainstream education. This provides children with a uniform, books and reduced administration, tuition and tutor fees. After graduating from high school students have a much greater chance of sustainable employment as well as the opportunity to attend university, breaking the cycle of poverty.
Unfortunately the cost of Tk 13 300 ($190 AUS) per year is still too high for the most marginalised families in the community. To increase support for these families SUF run a sponsorship program, Bright Girls and Bright Boys. This program allows community members and people abroad the opportunity to give a child access to high school education. Currently SUF have found sponsors for 20 children however many children are still waiting, with over 100 children in Dhaka alone seeking sponsorship.
Vocational Training (VT)
After graduating from NFE (grade VIII) students have the opportunity to enrol in a 6 months vocational training course. SUF tailor vocational training courses to what community demands are at the time, where there are gaps/opportunities and what is a sustainable workforce. SUF currently provide training in: tailoring, nackshikhantha, hand and machine embroidery, electronics, computer skills, weaving and others. Vocational training is held for 2 hours/day, 5 days/week. After vocational training students have the skills required to gain employment in non-hazardous workplaces and with support from SUF and the job placement program will be placed into employment that is non-hazardous and respectful of rights. SUF has Vocational Training centres in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Netrokona and Barisal. SUF Dhaka electronics VT course
Job Placement
After completing vocational training SUF provide students with support to develop a CV and find safe and secure employment. SUF work closely with employers to negotiate job placements ensuring they understand workers rights and abide by the code of conduct. Workplaces are continuously monitored by SUF and the community watch group.

Financial Support
SUF provide financial support to children and parents at risk of hazardous work with the aim of reducing hazardous work among children and supporting them and their parents to create a sustainable safe income or self employment opportunity.
Health Care and Legal Services for Children
Through linking with local hospitals and health care services SUF are able to provide children access to visiting dental, eye and child health check clinics every 6 months. SUF have also partnered with legal services which are available to support children in advocating for their rights. Children are able to build relationships with these local community services and feel they have the ability to access health care and legal support like other community members.
Recreation
Every SUF district holds an annual sports day event where children and youth are able to participate in traditional and popular sports through friendly competition. SUF also involve children in a range of cultural and social activities throughout the year, holding events on historical day and visiting cultural and recreational sites around Bangladesh.

Child & Youth Clubs
SUF have established child and youth clubs in each project area. These clubs are essentials as they allow children and youth to learn about life skills, child rights, hygiene, employment opportunities and other community issues such as early marriage and trafficking.
The clubs are run and lead by the children giving them ownership as well as teaching leadership skills. They allow children to socialise and express their thoughts and concerns in a safe and supportive environment. The child and youth clubs are also actively involved in the monitoring, evaluation and planning of SUF projects to ensure SUF are meeting the needs of the children.

Child Bank
SUF have established a formal banking system for students enrolled in SUF programs. The aim of this project is to teach children about banking systems and the importance of saving money. While this bank is facilitated by SUF, ownership and the running of this project is done by the students.
Parenting Program
The parenting program has been established in each of the SUF project areas. The program establishes a groups of parents with the aim of supporting parents to develop non-violent, protecting and nurturing environments for their children. The groups give parents the opportunity to learn about child rights, hygiene and other community issues such as early marriage and trafficking. It is also an opportunity for the parents to socialise and express their thoughts and concerns in a safe and supportive environment.
SUF actively engage with the parenting program to support the monitoring, evaluation and planning of SUF activities resulting with many parents leading community programs.
Community Watch Groups
SUF have established Community Watch Groups (CWG) in each of the SUF districts. These groups are made up of community members and with support and training from SUF have the role of monitoring workplaces, ensuring employers adhere to the code of conduct, advocating for child rights and educating community members about child rights. These groups work closely with SUF in relation to planning, monitoring and evaluating projects. This ensures SUF are appropriately addressing community needs and establish community driven activities.
