Project Areas
Due to SUF's ability to adapt and move with community needs and demands they have been able to support projects in numerous regions across Bangladesh. Within each region SUF work with community members and other local organisations to ensure projects address community needs, members are actively involved and projects are sustainable.
SUF have also worked in the districts of: Chittagong, Tanghal, Manikgong, Sylhet, Khulna and Zamalpur. For more information about past projects contact Tipu Sultan.
Dhaka
Ramna Thana, Dhaka
Project Name: Chhinna Mukul Prokalpa (Supported by: Save the Children, Sweden Denmark & Australian AusAid)
Ramna is a Thana (or sub-district) situated in the middle of Dhaka Metropolitan City. The total area of Ramna Thana is 63km² and home to 325,000 people, making Ramna Thana one of the most densely populated areas in Bangladesh and it is still rapidly increasing. Majority of people coming to Ramna Thana are migrating from rural areas in search of work however due to high poverty and population there is an increasing demand for child domestics and working children. Currently there are 25 slums within Ramna Thana. In 1997 SUF identified 15,304 children (5-17 years of age) who were involved in various forms of child labour due to financial hardship. The Chhinna Mukkul Prokalpa project works with these most marginalised children and families.
SUF were first established in Ramna Thana in 1988 in Moghbazar. The initial focus of this site was to provide working children access to education and increase their awareness of their rights. Since this time SUF have created strong links with community members and through their support have been able to advocate and expand project strategies.
Current Projects in Dhaka Include:
 Teaching Training
 Community Education Sessions

Mymensingh
Project Name: Develop Appropriate Alternatives in Rural Areas to Reduce Rural Urban Children Migration
(Supported by: Save the Children- Sweden Denmark)
Mymensingh is a rural district located north of Dhaka. It is 4363km² in size and home to 4,439,017 people. SUF has been working in Mymensingh for numerous years, focusing closely on the most marginalised communities in the Thana's of Sadar and Fullpur.
This region is also prone to flooding, increasing the already present hardship for people living in slum areas. As Mymensingh is relatively close to Dhaka and due to the high level of poverty there is a high migration rate of marginalized people moving their whole families and or sending their children to the city to seek employment and a better life. Due to lack of work opportunities in Dhaka however majority of people are often found in workplaces that are not only low paid but in many cases hazardous in nature. Due to work hours and the need of incomes many children cannot access education, being deprived of their rights.
The SUF Mymensingh project aims to reduce rural-urban children's migration in project areas through increased education, skills and community driven projects leading to increased opportunities and sustainable options for families in Mymensingh.
Current Projects in Mymensingh Include:
 Teaching Training
 Community Education Sessions

Barisal
Project Name: Vocational Training and Education Assistance for Youth in Pirojpur District
(Supported by: Kokkyo naki Kodomotachi (KnK)-Japan)
Barisal Division is located in south-central Bangladesh, with an area of 13295km² and a population of 7,757,000 people. Barisal is one of the many Bangladesh regions affected by seasonal weather patterns and was recently victim to the devastating cyclone Sidr in 2007 which resulted in many infrastructural and human losses.
SUF works in two Barisal Thana's, Nessarabad and Kawkhali, working in 5 village sites. Majority of these communities live under the poverty line. Due to hardship, lack of work and income, many marginalized families and children are forced to move from the villages to urban areas in search of better living conditions. Many leave with no assets or savings therefore parents and children are forced to take up whatever employment opportunities they come across, many of which are low paying and hazardous in nature. Due to working hours and costs children are unable to attend mainstream schools therefore many marginalised children in this region have poor levels of education; lacking basic reading and writing skills for future life opportunities.
The Vocational Training and Education Assistance for Youth project aims to improve the economic situation, learning environments and reduce rural-urban children's migration in village project areas. This is being achieved through the following projects:

Gazipur
Project Name: Agricultural Project
Gazipur district is situated between Dhaka and Mymensingh. It covers an area of 1,742km² and is home to 2,026,244 people. Gazipur is a new site for SUF with the project plan still in development. Through assessing community needs however this project will look to strengthen sustainable agriculture opportunities among the community. It will do this through training and teaching community members about sustainable, ecological agricultural practices enabling community members to develop techniques and skills to later build their own sustainable agricultural opportunities.
Netrakona
Project Name: Community Response in Education (CRE)(Supported by: Save the Children- Sweden Denmark)
Netrokona is a rural region situated in the northern part of Bangladesh, covering an area of 2,810km² and home to 1,937,794 people (51% female, 49% male). Unfortunately due to financial hardships among the Netrokona community, child labour is increasing at an alarming rate with children as young as 8 years old entering the workforce.
The recent approval of the 2008 National Child Labour Eradication Policy indicates that child labourers have the right to free, compulsory, quality education linked to vocational training. This policy should be opening educational opportunities for working children, compelling employers to provide adequate time for education and for the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education to assure appropriate education and training is available for working children however this is still not being seen in rural Bangladesh. The CRE project aims to work with government primary schools and community members to strengthen education services in Netrokona.
Education for working children is often inaccessible due to inflexible timetables and rigid school calendars. Teachers are often not skilled in working with children from marginalised backgrounds and school curriculum and teaching/learning techniques are often inappropriate. The SUF CRE project works to strengthen and train teachers, primary education systems, community members, parents and children in developing an overall collaborative and whole community driven education system.
The CRE project has been established since 2009. SUF are currently working with 27 government schools and have establish many great community driven networks resulting in the provision of access and quality education for countless marginalised children in Netrokona.
