The Society for Underprivileged Families (SUF) provides education to disadvantaged working children.
SUF teaches the community about child rights, and fosters awareness of the plight of working children.
This awareness can change the fate of millions of children and help to eradicate Child Labour in Bangladesh.
SUF is an NGO registered in Bangladesh, that was started in 1982 by Md Zamal Uddin and a dedicated team of social workers in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
SUF aims to help the millions of working children in Bangladesh, who work, at ages as young as 4 years old, in full time jobs in industry, agricultural labour, domestic work and even as sex workers.
These children are sent to work because their families cannot afford to feed and educate them, and need the child's income to help the survival of the family.
Most of the children that SUF helps are Child Domestic Workers, who are mainly girls, and are hidden in houses throughout the country, working long hours with no pay and often abusive employers. SUF sends out social workers into the community, to persuade employers to send these children, on a part time basis, to SUF's free schools so that they can receive a basic education.
The children receive non-formal education, learning Maths, Bangla, English and Social science. They enjoy recreation and the chance to meet and play with other children. They receive free medical care and learn about Child Rights. They attend school to Grade 8.
The children who do well in this non-formal eduaction are given the opportunity to enter formal school, through the Bright Girls and Boys Project. SUF finds sponsors to provide these children with the funds to attend formal school, and go on to higher education.
After Grade 8, the children may go on to have vocational training classes in Tailoring, Embroidery or Electronics.
SUF has now started Tailoring Production and this not only teaches the students about garment manufacture, but also employs the graduates from the tailoring school, and helps to make SUF more sustainable.
Products are sold through the website at www.infinitycottage.com and the profits go back to SUF to help educate working children.
